Our mission
The Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery and the Department of Art & Design at Keene State College share a common vision of student-centered learning based on direct experience with the visual arts. Whether in the form of invitational exhibitions, visiting artist labs/lectures, or work with the permanent collection, our students will be given the opportunity to explore a diverse range of artistic expression both historical and contemporary. So too, students will build professional skills that will serve to increase their earning potential in visual art careers. These include, but are not limited to, gallery operation (collection development, registration, and archiving) as well as exhibition research, curation, design, and installation. The Gallery will also serve as a chief means of arts outreach and education serving the broader campus and local communities. Overall, we seek to be a regional nexus that promotes curiosity, creativity, and critical engagement with the visual arts.

- To provide educational programming in the form of exhibitions, labs, lectures, and research opportunities
- To develop meaningful interactions between artists, students, and community members
- To represent diverse voices and visions
- To model the Gallery experience as a “living classroom” – (a collective, collaborative, and cathartic space)

Student Workers
During the academic year, and sometimes during the summer, the Thorne needs help. We look for students with a love for art, galleries, and motivation to learn about the curatorial process, installation mechanics, archiving and cataloging the galleries’ collections, artwork preservation and working alongside our staff throughout the year to help with the simple day-to-day necessities that allow a gallery to function. Students would be the face that visitors first see, to go to for information and invitation. We would love to have you come work with us, here at the Thorne! Drawing classes are held in the gallery space during the spring semester to help expand students workspace beyond the typical classroom environment.
