All students are encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/keenestate.my.salesforce-sites.com\/admission\/TargetX_Eventsb__formpage?formid=217804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apply and audition<\/a> early in the year to ensure eligibility for appropriate financial assistance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keenestate.my.salesforce-sites.com\/admission\/TargetX_Eventsb__formpage?formid=217804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Request an audition<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Considering Keene State?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/keenestate.wufoo.com\/forms\/s1y2dj1e18hl4d7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visit our campus for a Shadow Day!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each music applicant must take a music theory and aural skills placement test as part of the audition. Students with no or little theory background are encouraged to find a tutor, a website (e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musictheory.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.musictheory.net<\/a>), software, and\/or a self-instruction book to become familiar with the basic theory and notation of music (clefs, key signatures, intervals, chords, grand staff, rhythmic notation, meters, time signatures).<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nAuditions for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2025-2026<\/span> academic year will continue to be held by individual appointments.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nAuditions for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2026-2027<\/span> academic year will continue to be held on these dates:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>January 30, 2026<br \/>\nFebruary 13, 2026<br \/>\nMarch 6, 2026<br \/>\nMarch 27, 2026<br \/>\n<em>(Online and in-person auditions available)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Specific Audition Requirements<\/h4>\n<h4>Bowed Strings<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Major and minor scales and arpeggios, preferably two octaves<\/li>\n<li>Two contrasting pieces demonstrating lyrical and technical playing (ex: slow &amp; fast movements of sonatas or concertos, \u00e9tudes, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Sight reading<\/li>\n<li>Students with a jazz or electric bass background may prepare a jazz standard as part of their audition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Composition<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Audition is required on your primary voice or instrument<\/li>\n<li>Complete a composition interview: bring a repertoire list and two representative scores to the interview (same day as the audition)<\/li>\n<li><em>Optional: recordings may be submitted but are not required<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Guitar<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>One- or two-octave major scales in first and second position (C, G, D, A, E, F)<\/li>\n<li>Two short pieces or \u00e9tudes that demonstrate a basic technique (suggested composers are Sor, Carcassi, Brouwer, or Tarrega)<\/li>\n<li>Students with a jazz or electric guitar background may prepare a jazz standard as part of their audition, in addition to the two required classical pieces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Percussion<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>All percussion auditions: two prepared and contrasting snare drum solos or etudes (preferably one in simple and one in compound time); basic rudiments; snare drum sight-reading<\/li>\n<li>Timpani and mallet pieces are required for a B.M. Performance audition (optional for other degree auditions). Tuning and scales may be asked of those playing timpani and mallets<\/li>\n<li>Students with a drum set background may be asked to display styles (swing, bossa, samba, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Piano<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>For Music Education or Bachelor of Arts programs: perform two contrasting pieces, at least one from the Baroque or Classical period, preferably from memory<\/li>\n<li>For B.M. Performance program: same requirements as above, plus one additional piece that contrasts with the other two selections and periods<\/li>\n<li>Sight reading<\/li>\n<li>Prepared scales and\/or technical exercises (major and minor scales, arpeggios, etudes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Technology<\/h4>\n<p>The Music Technology degree is part of the Bachelor of Music program. It is expected that each student attain a level of musicianship, in instrument or voice, equivalent to those students in the Music Education and Music Composition programs.<\/p>\n<p>An audition is required on your primary voice or instrument:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bowed Strings<\/li>\n<li>Guitar<\/li>\n<li>Percussion<\/li>\n<li>Piano<\/li>\n<li>Voice<\/li>\n<li>Woodwind and Brass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Voice<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Perform from memory two classical songs of contrasting styles<\/li>\n<li>Sight singing<\/li>\n<li>Vocalizing on scales and arpeggios<\/li>\n<li>Interview with voice faculty<\/li>\n<li>An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions. Please bind all photocopies of your music or bring the original copies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Woodwinds and Brass<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Major, minor, and chromatic scales, two octaves where applicable<\/li>\n<li>Two contrasting pieces demonstrating lyrical and technical playing (ex: slow &amp; fast movements of sonatas or concertos, \u00e9tudes, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Sight reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I cannot thank the staff and students enough for the amazing audition day we experienced on March 23rd.
