Athletic Training Accreditation

Keene State College is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE):

CAATE
6850 Austin Center Blvd.
Suite 100, Austin, TX
78731-3101

The program has chosen to Voluntarily Withdraw its CAATE Accreditation effective December 31, 2021.

The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) is now requiring all entry-level professional preparation for Athletic Training to be offered at the Master’s degree level. As a result, the College put the Bachelor of Science in AT under administrative review. The College has decided to move forward with a formal withdraw from accreditation and will teach out our students in the undergraduate program under our current accreditation status.

Students who are currently matriculated to Keene State College must declare the BS in Athletic Training by January 2018 and must complete his or her degree by December 2021. The College, the Department of Human Performance & Movement Sciences and the Athletic Training academic program will work closely with the accrediting agency to maintain the accreditation status that allows graduates to sit for the Board of Certification Examination.

With the increased academic rigor of the program, positive increases in the program’s first time pass rate on the Certification examination have occurred. However, this has significantly affected the overall retention rate of students to successfully complete the degree: BS in Athletic Training. Employment rate is a statistic that is “self-reported” by graduates and is not always an accurate reflection of true employment. While ~50%-60% of graduates are employed as certified athletic trainers, another 25%-30% of graduates are employed in medical, allied health and durable medical fields.

Students entering the college in academic year 2018 and beyond are encouraged to declare the BS in Exercise Science-Allied Health Option. This option is designed to support students wishing to pursue careers in cardiac rehabilitation, exercise physiology, or postgraduate medical and allied health fields (Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistance, Chiropractic, and others).

*In 2015-2016, the BS in AT began admitting students into the program as freshman/first year students. Thus removing a secondary admission process. Thus the retention/graduation rates became one statistic. The overall graduation rate then dropped from ~80% to ~50%. Of those that remain in the academic program after the 3rd semester, the program has a graduation rate of 75-85% in 4 years. Students who are also student athletes graduate in 4.5 years. Retention rates for the purpose of CAATE outcome measures are calculated from the 3rd semester to graduation.
